SEO is a trendy term in the age of digital marketing, and it is a very powerful tool for a business if you are in the industry of e-commerce services and/or products. As a business owner, it is incredibly important for one to know the general basics of incorporating a simple yet effective SEO strategy that works for their business to build an effective funnel to drive sales and conversions. In this post, we’ll go through what SEO is and why SEO matters to your business and how you can get started with optimization to get your business on search engine results and attract the attention of your target audience.

What is SEO?

SEO is the abbreviated term for search engine optimization; it is the process and practice of creating quality content on the web to improve your positioning in search engine results by way of organic search. This is one of the reasons why blogging is important to businesses because, for search engines to find information, there needs to be content available for them to crawl and present to users.

Another term important to SEO is SERP which is the abbreviation of search engine results page and is the ultimate end goal for quality SEO strategies; to appear as the first organic search result on a SERP.

Why Is SEO Important for a business?

SEO may seem like a term or strategy that is only relevant to bloggers or content creators. However, businesses should also consider investing in a quality SEO strategy.

An analogy that I use to describe SEO is; search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo are skyscraper buildings, and each floor to this building is a piece of content, and the higher your floor is, the more visitors you’ll get.

In other words, SEO is important for businesses because your business website is your company’s storefront, the content on your website are the products on the shelves in your store, and SEO is the organic (not paid) marketing strategy (i.e., the sign on your door, the word of mouth recommendations) you use to get people into your store to potentially turn them into customers and not just visitors.

“Because organic search is the most prominent way for people to discover and access online content, a good SEO strategy is essential for improving the quality and quantity of traffic to your website.”

When you put it into simpler terms, this is how SEO can help businesses because you have the upper hand when it comes to utilizing organic search results instead of paid search ads. Web users are more likely to click on an organic result than a paid ad as there is credibility that the search engine has recommended the most relevant answer to the user’s query.

In other words, the higher you show up at the top of a SERP, the more authority and credibility you have as a brand. As a business, simply because you cannot pay a search engine for a higher rank, you can only earn it.

Having an optimized website is a crucial tool and asset to your business and search ranking if you’re a business owner. Like all marketing strategies, you must consider who your customer is and where they are coming from and plan and strategize holistically to avoid missing out on a potential lead. Here are some simple things you can do right now to improve your SEO ranking.

  • Start a blog for your business (if you haven’t already)
  • Check that your current content and web pages are up to date
  • Rewrite or remove any irrelevant or dated content
  • Add or update Meta descriptions
  • Update or add Images
  • Add image alt tags
  • Sitemap your website
  • After updates, repost on social platforms

Immediately after these updates and changes are made, make sure to track your analytics results. SEO is a slow-growth strategy, and it will take time for Google and other search engines to fully crawl your website for updates and new and fresh content that can be matched with ranking keywords and queries from users.

SEO matters especially for your business, invest in it.

Nowadays, entrepreneurs of businesses large and small take up digital space to exist in today’s technology-driven world.
